WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS?

Dental Crowns are used to surround or “cap” a damaged tooth. As well as strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. We use porcelain or ceramic crowns which are matched exactly to the colour of your natural teeth.

We particularly recommend dental crowns in the following situations:

To protect a weak tooth from fracturing
To restore a fractured tooth
To replace a large filling
To cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment
To cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth

HOW ARE CROWNS MADE?

Crowns are completed over two appointments approximately two weeks apart. At the first appointment the tooth which is being treatment is reduced in size so that the custom made crown can fit over it properly. An impression of your teeth is then taken which is sent to a dental laboratory, who will construct the final crown. A temporary crown is placed to cover the prepared tooth while the work is completed. At the second appointment the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented over the prepared tooth.

HOW LONG TO CROWNS LAST?

They can last a life time however they do sometimes come loose or fall out. The most important thing to ensure that your crown lasts is to keep your teeth as clean as possible. This is done through a mixture of brushing and flossing at home as well as regular cleaning appointments with your dentist.

Does getting a crown hurt?
Placing a crown involves numbing the tooth with local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself shouldn’t be painful. Some sensitivity is normal for a few days afterwards as the tooth settles.

What’s the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A crown covers the entire tooth and is used when a tooth is significantly damaged or weakened, while a veneer only covers the front surface and is generally used for cosmetic changes to an otherwise healthy tooth.

What happens if my temporary crown comes loose before my second appointment?
Contact the practice as soon as possible. A loose or missing temporary crown can leave the prepared tooth exposed and should be re-fitted promptly.

Can a tooth with a crown still develop a cavity?
Yes. A crown protects the visible part of the tooth, but decay can still develop at the gumline or root, so regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups remain essential.
